RECENT THOUGHTS FROM CLIENTS:

We were in search of an architecture professional to step us through the building process. Our property in Payson, AZ, has a rugged topography and a steep incline from the road. VQ Design PLLC is outstanding! The firm very methodically stepped us through the process. Architecture is about more than what’s on the outside. Architecture is about problem solving, meeting client needs, and making daily life better. VQ Design takes it all into consideration — how we would live in our new space, and how their innovative approach to design would make our life better. Much thanks to Lawrence Bowen!

"I have used VQ Design since 2016. This company is the only Architectural/Design firm I use for all my building projects. Lawrence has been great to work with. Always on time, easy to work with and very professional. I recommend Lawrence to anyone who asks me for a referral. I will be contacting Lawrence next month to draw up plans for another project I am starting."

Architect: "A person who designs buildings and advises in their construction"--Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary

Architect (noun): “A designer of buildings, who prepares plans, and superintends construction”—The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles

Architect (verb): “Design and build; plan and bring about (a desired result)”—The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles

"It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic, of all things physical and metaphysical, of all things human and all things superhuman, of all true manifestations of the head, of the heart, of the soul, that the life is recognizable in its expression, that form ever follows function. This is the law."--Louis Henry Sullivan, Architect, from his 1896 essay "The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered"

This statement encapsulates Sullivan's belief that the design of a building or any object should be directly related to its intended function or purpose.

Organic Architecture is a philosophy of architecture that promotes harmony between human habitation and the natural world. This is achieved through design approaches that aim to be sympathetic and well-integrated with a site, so buildings, furnishings, and surroundings become part of a unified interrelated composition.

Building Science Defined

Building science is a field of knowledge that draws upon physics, chemistry, engineering, architecture, and the life sciences. Understanding the physical behavior of the building as a system and how this impacts energy efficiency, durability, comfort, and indoor air quality is essential to innovating high-performance buildings. Modern building science attempts to work with models of the building as a system, and to apply empirical techniques to the effective solution of design problems.

Neil Hutcheon, the famous Canadian building scientist, defined building science as "a term now widely used, for want of a better one, to describe the growing body of knowledge about the relevant physical science and its application."--Whole Building Design Guide (Published by the National Institute of Building Sciences)

"Architectural Design is a complex activity that involves multiple levels of knowledge, communication, and production, even on a small project. Architects often speak their own language, both in terminology and through conventions of drawings, models, and diagrams. Moreover, to make a piece of architecture requires following countless rules of which an able practitioner must remain ever knowledgeable: building codes, human dimensions, drawing standards, material properties, and relevant technologies. Familiarity with so many issues comes with schooling and long years of experience, but even the seasoned architect must avail him- or herself of a vast and exhaustive array of resources, from code books to graphic standards, from materials libraries to manufacturers' catalogs."--The Architecture Reference + Specification Book

VQ Design PLLC is committed to being a professional architectural design firm well-known for its exceptional service, integrity, and understanding of our clients' needs.

"VQ" stands for vox quartus, which means 'fourth voice' in Latin. It represents Lawrence H. Bowen, IV's role as the fourth (IV) in his family line and reflects the architectural statement he makes through VQ Design PLLC.

It is believed to be one of the oldest and strongest connections between math and creative arts.

Almost all of nature’s elements contain the Golden Ratio (1:1.618). The Golden Ratio can be found in nature in everything from the structure of the universe to the human body, clouds to flowers and leaves. Nearly all of the beautiful things in the world around us have this ratio. The National award-winning VQ Design PLLC Studio reflects these proportions perfectly.
